Why vote?

by: apip0115

Sun Jun 15, 2008 at 20:45:36 PM CDT

I keep hearing people talking about how they probably won't vote or that they don't care. And finally I just couldn't take it anymore. I thought for a long time of something intelligent that I could say to them and this is what I came up with.

The election is always weighing heavily on my mind especially right now when times are tough on everyone. You can tell times are tough just by going to the gas station or reading the paper. Most of the conversations today are about tough times. Usually I just hear a lot of complaining, but not with enough passion to actually want to do anything about it. Sometimes I hear someone who is truly concerned about an issue, but doesn’t know how to help. To the average complainers and to the truly concerned: VOTE.

This is a crucial point in history and I can no longer listen to pessimists who shrug off their right to vote. And if you were ever denied the right to vote at any point in history then you should celebrate your vote. The people who fought for the Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendment worked so hard so that you could exercise these rights, not take them for granted. I am just shocked by those who will not vote simply because of lack of enthusiasm or information. Your vote is important. People’s lives will be affected by this election! If you are able to vote you should, period. So why aren’t you going to vote? Let me tell why you should:

If you have ever complained about gas prices then you should vote.

If you are shocked by the amount of taxes taken out of your paycheck then you should vote.

If you have an opinion about minimum wage then you should vote.

If you can not find a job then you should vote.

If you are working hard just to get by then you should vote.

If you want a good education for yourself or your children then you should vote.

If you want better support for teachers then you should vote.

If you want to be able to afford higher education then you should vote.

If you are worried about our environment then you should vote.

If you think we are too dependent on foreign oil then you should vote.

If global warming is important to you then you should vote.

If you do not have health insurance then you should vote.

If you have ever had any opinion about the War in Iraq then you should vote.

If you have ever wanted to help those in poverty then you should vote.

If you believe in equal rights then you should vote.

If you have any opinion about immigration then you should vote.

If you are saddened by homeless veterans then you should vote.

If you meet the legal requirements then you should vote.

So before you start thinking that your one vote won’t make a difference, stop to think how many others are thinking like you and how that is making a difference, but not in a good way. Before you belittle your right to vote think of the bigger picture. If we could change the minds of most of the pessimists then together we really could make a difference. We could make a difference for ourselves, our families, our children and future children, our friends, our veterans, and America as a whole. VOTE.

Obama on Executive Power

Yesterday LithiumCola wrote about the Boston Globe's questionnaire about Executive Power. S/he wrote about the strong answers Senator Obama gave. We'll I thought I'd focus a diary just on his answers and not just on the two questions LC highlighted. The questionnaire is quite informative and gives you a good look at were the canidates stand. All except Fred Thomson who was asleep and Rudy Giuliani who was day dreaming about 9/11.

Professor Obama will restore the Constitution

by: Populista

Sat Dec 15, 2007 at 16:46:30 PM CST

Today is a very important holiday. The congress did not nearly unanimously pass a resolution recognizing it's importance. But it's pretty damn important in my mind, I am speaking of course of the Bill Of Rights day. How am I celebrating Bill of Rights day? I've already drunk some tea from my disappearing civil liberties cup as shown above and watch our bill of rights disappear (Thanks Patriot Act!) Now I'm mad enough to do something about it. But first I recommend you get a similar cup. Only 11 dollars on Amazon. Now on to the real topic of the diary, why I believe former Professor (He was actually a Senior Lecturer in Law but professor sounds better) Obama will restore our constitution and our Bill of Rights. And a little call to action.

Action: One Week to Stop Big Media

by: Populista

Tue Dec 11, 2007 at 16:21:26 PM CST

(Note: I know this isn't really Obama related but I think it should be important for us. WaPo and all the media can get away with there crap because of this kind of stuff and that is directly related to our mission. -Populista)

The FCC wants to give Big Media a big handout on December 18 - but we can stop them. There is only about one year left of the Bush Administration and they are rushing to give big rewards to there giant corporate friends. One of those big corporate friends is Big Media. And Kevin Martin, the chair of the FCC that deals with media policy wants to give another hugely unpopular giveaway to Big Media. Thankfully the democracy fighters at Free Press have assembled a massive coalition that is fighting back. It's called Stop Big Media and they've been doing great work. And now that there is only a week left until the ruling I decided to write a action diary because this is one of the most important issues out there for progressives and all who believe in fairness.

Obama: Congress's Failure To Pass Hate Crimes Legislation, "Truly Unacceptable"

by: Populista

It is a few days old (Thursday) but I just ran across this statement by Barack Obama on the spineless Democratic leaderships decision to strip the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. This is a very important issue to me because I have gay uncles on both sides of the family. My godfathers are gay and yet a radical minority has used hatred and bigotry to size on people's fears and prejudices and gain political power to enforce there radical, hateful agenda. And those bigots have made it into the "mainstream" of political dialog and blocked one of the most seemingly uncontroversial and simple laws with threats of retaliation.

Obama: Keep Americans Warm + Action

by: Populista

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 20:47:01 PM CST

( - promoted by psericks)

Barack Obama today joined with progressive hero Senator Bernard Sanders (I-VT) to introduce the Keep Americans Warm Act of 2007. It may sound like something you read in the Onion but it is real. His legislation would provide an additional $1 billion in emergency funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to ensure that millions of low-income families, senior citizens, and disabled Americans are able to heat their homes, keep their lights on, and cook their food during the coldest months of the year. Bush proposed reducing LIHEAP funding in his budget proposal. Then he turned around and vetoed LIHEAP funding included in the Senate-passed version of the Labor HHS bill. This puts millions of Americans at risk of not being able to heat their homes this winter. Most of us probably will be able to heat our homes but the reality is that millions simply can't afford it.

Obama: Our Kids, Our Future

by: Populista

(great work, populista - promoted by icebergslim)

This morning in Manchester, New Hampshire, Barack Obama delivered a major policy address, unveiling his comprehensive plan to provide a world-class education for all Americans. Obama has seen since his days as a community organizer in impoverished urban neighborhood the importance of a good education. He fought for better education as a community organizer, state senator and United States Senator. Plus as a former university professor I believe he is the only teacher running for presidential. LBJ was a teacher and he passed some of the most important education reforms in our country's history. Could teacher Obama become the next education president? Read about his plan below.

Obama: A Record Fighting Avian Flu

by: Populista

Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 20:26:15 PM CST

Cross-posted on DailyKos Populista and MyDD
When you saw this you might have said "Avian Flu? Who cares about Avian Flu?" But people should care about Avian Flu, and it's a perfect example of how Barack Obama gets things done on issues that may not seem glamorous but could affect the life's of millions of people. Barack Obama has been a leader in the Senate on Avian Flu and has worked hard to implement solutions. He has a quite impressive record on this issue and I urge you to look even further into it but I'll try to summarize it best I can.
